UNDERSTANDING PHENYLKETONURIA (PKU)

Phenylketonuria phenylketonuria is a rare inherited disorder. It affects the individual's ability to metabolize an amino acid called phenylalanine. Normally, the liver makes an enzyme designated as phenylalanine hydroxylase, which transforms phenylalanine into tyrosine. In people who have PKU, this enzyme is function properly. As a result, phenylal
